THE ORIGIN
In the Nyeri region of Kenya, Karogoto is a washing station that is managed by the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), which collects cherries from 1,800 smallholder farmers. This is an “AB” lot, which is typically a mix of large & medium sized dense cherries, AA and AB being the most common sizes.
THE PROCESS
Cherries are hand sorted and only ripe ones are pulped and fermented overnight in tanks. After being washed and graded by density, cherries are dried on raised beds for 10 to 16 days. Slow drying allows for consistent moisture reduction while preserving clarity and flavour. These wooden raised beds are also gradually being upgraded to metallic ones to increase efficiency of drying and longevity of these beds.
WHY WE CHOSE THIS COFFEE
Karogoto is a washing station that we find ourselves constantly coming back to, for their intensely sweet and juicy coffees. Given the complex coffee purchasing system in Kenya, we are excited to be able to showcase yet another year of Karogoto! In this cup, we are tasting dark plums simmering in dense cranberry sauce, exuding subtle purple florals!
