THE ORIGIN
Gakundu washing station lies in the Embu region of Kenya, operated by the Gakundu Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), home to more than 1,200 smallholder farmers.
THE PROCESS
Coffees are hand picked and sorted into different grades, this lot being an AA, consisting of mostly large beans. Utilising an electric disc pulper, cherries are pulped at a higher and more efficient rate. Then cherries are dry fermented to ease the removal of mucilage. After washing off the mucilage, beans are left to dry on raised beds.
WHY WE CHOSE THIS COFFEE
We wanted to showcase the diversity of different lots - “AA” and “AB”. Kenyan coffees are sorted into different grades post processing, “AA” beans are larger and denser than “AB”. This doesn’t necessarily dictate quality, rather it results in contrasting cups - “AA” having a juicier and bigger body. In this lot, we are tasting red dates, hawthorn with jammy rhubarb!
