Karimikui Factory produces one of our favourite Kenyan coffees consistently. This is an AB lot, where the beans of slightly smaller sizes are sorted together. Traditionally it was believed that the larger AA beans are superior, but we’ve come across many AB lots that are equally delicious.
Karimikui is owned by Rungeto Farmers Co-operative Society (FCS) along with a few other factories in Kirinyaga Kenya. In this region, there are more tea growers than coffee. However, we’ve come across so many delicious coffees from Kirinyaga & Karimikui has consistently been one of them. The cherries are sorted through grading channels before being pulped & dry fermented overnight. The cooler temperatures at night allow for a more gentle fermentation, before they are rinsed the morning after & transferred to the drying beds.
We selected Karimikui AB for its consistency in delivering delicious coffees year after year. While the processing protocols have evolved, we’re still enjoying the vibrant red berry & currant notes that are synonymous with Kenyan coffees.
