Rwanda is an origin that we have a soft spot for & we’re excited to feature this delicious coffee from the Ubumwe Washing Station in Kamonyi, Rwanda. Ubumwe is owned by Buf Cafe, which was founded by Epiphanie Mukashyaka. Buf Cafe owns 4 washing stations in different districts, showcasing the diversity of Rwandan coffees.

Most smallholder farmers in Rwanda grow Bourbon trees which are decades old. This means the trees are incredibly healthy, producing sweet & ripe cherries year after year. The farmers pay a lot of attention to the soil health & regularly receive help, but what has been the biggest help is that Ubumwe comes attached with a cupping lab. This means that quality is easily checked regularly & farmers can be brought into the loop as well.

One of our favourite things about coffee production in Rwanda is that the majority of the workforce in the industry is run by females! Epiphanie is an excellent example of women empowerment in this region. She rebuilt her family’s farm despite the personal adversities she faced in post-genocide Rwanda, paving way for better opportunities.

Coffees go through a strict quality control, from floating & removing under-ripe cherries to hand-sorting the parchment after drying. Coffees are typically pulped & fermented under water for 12-18 hours before they are rinsed & soaked for another 24 hours to stabilise the moisture content. This is truly a step that we believe adds an extra layer of clean juicy flavours to coffees from Rwanda!

This coffee is a classic Rwandan profile and we picked this coffee for its smooth, lively acidity as well as its jammy mouthfeel. The flavours are incredibly distinct, with notes of red dates and orange plums. We hope you will enjoy this coffee as much as we do!
